effort to alert drivers especially those turning left from northbound 28th onto the side streets to the presence of cyclists, officials say. 36 in the right turn lane July 22 when a vehicle traveling west turned left onto Violet Avenue, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The circumstances were similar to the accident that killed Casey Najera, 60, in the same intersection in 2009.
CDOT spokeswoman Mindy Crane said Friday that the timeline for the project is dependent on the weather.
"The fundamental issue that we observed is that northbound vehicles will make a left turn and they either don't see the bike, or they see them approaching and they are in the right turn lane and the drivers are confused and not sure what to do," he said. "Twice that's resulted in a cyclist being killed in an accident. What we tried to do is come up with striping and signage to let a northbound driver know that the bike may be coming and that they need to yield, and just make them look for bikes."
"I think, a lot of the time, the community is used to sharing the road, and I think (these steps) are just another good reminder that all modes of transportation can be out on highways and we need to obey the traffic laws to make sure the roadways are safe," Crane said.
"I feel like everybody came together to make something happen and help the community," Prant said. "I hope it's safe, and I hope we don't see any more accidents there."

City traffic engineer Bill Cowern said the new striping should help address the issue of cars turning left off of northbound 28th without seeing cyclists because the new lines will better show the path vehicles should follow and prevent dangerously wide or fast turns.
CDOT hopes to complete the work over the next two weeks.
Following two fatal accidents involving cyclists at a north Boulder intersection within three years, new striping and signage will soon be added to a stretch of 28th Street.
Colorado Department of Transportation officials on Friday confirmed plans to stripe a dedicated bike lane along the western edge of 28th Street between Broadway and Jay Road, thinning dedicated acceleration and deceleration lanes at several intersections to accommodate the new lane without widening the road.
After Doherty's death, Community Cycles, a nonprofit organization dedicated to education and advocacy for the safe use of bicycles, began sending letters to CDOT requesting the agency take a look at the intersection of 28th and Violet ahead of a major redesign of the intersection scheduled for 2015.
The agency will also add signs at the intersections of 28th and Lee Hill Drive, Yarmouth Avenue and Violet Fendi Travel Duffle Bag
